One of my top ten wardrobe essentials, the Midi Skirt, is unbound by fashion trends as of late.
Contrary to fashion norms, Midi skirts have been trending for several years and is a highly photographed look on social media. For example one of my most-liked-ever posts is from 2014 of me wearing a hand me down from my mom. I recall posting this look and being shocked when the next time I checked and it had reached over 250 likes (when at that time my average was 40!).
Since I knew I must be on to something, I always incorporate the midi skirt into my seasonal capsule wardrobe.
This brings me to today’s look, the metallic Zara pleat skirt. The huge popularity of this skirt qualifies it as the 11th trend item on my list! Trend pieces, however, can really crash and burn without proper attention to styling details.
I’ll admit, I struggled with styling this metallic skirt for my lifestyle because it’s definitely not for work or play!
The key is to let the midi skirt stand alone and keep the rest of the look neutral and coordinated. The metallic pleats are a focus no matter how you slice it! So I topped off the skirt with an All Saints graphic tee and balanced the proportions with an oversized Everlane cardigan. The All Saints graphic tee also ticks that trend box and, it turns out, is a great conversation starter!
To avoid a common styling pitfall of midi skirts I added a 4 inch chunky heeled sandal from Opening Ceremony. The heel adds the height I’m always coveting and the chunkyness is for pure comfort (no stilettos for me!)
If you’re petite it’s important to add heels to lift the look of the midi skirt, which can weigh down a small frame.
The white shoe doesn’t compete with the silver either. The tan inset of the sandal is picked up in the bucket bag, but not so obvious to be matchy-matchy. Last but not least, I added simple RayBan frames and minimalist jewelry.
