When Sherri McMullen reached out to me to cohost the Nomia trunk show and document the day via an Instagram takeover, I didn’t hesitate to accept.
I’ve followed the brand since spotting Yara Flinn’s pieces on longtime stylecrush Jane Min of the blog Stop It Right Now. This past Saturday McMullen Boutique treated lovers and new discoverers of Nomia to a day with the designer behind the brand. A former ‘baller, Yara is down to earth and approachable; an around the way girl with a hella’ wicked sense of humor.
Hailing from Williamsburg, Yara has an aesthetic that weaves effortlessly into the Oakland-as-Brooklyn narrative. “Minimal” and “Utilitarian” are the buzz words often applied to Yara’s streamlined approach. However, these terms belie the truth behind the focus, sweat equity, and savvy behind Nomia.
My husband, a builder who is often indifferent to fashion summed up my Nomia Trestle dress with, “she takes a simple form and adds design to it”. Simply put, Yara makes it look easy. However Nomia is celebrating its 10th year in production which is no easy feat.
The trunk show was a huge hit as customers can easily see themselves in Nomia. For example, the midnight navy Crossover Jumpsuit and the Trestle Dress flew off the rack. Also, the navy ribbed knit dress was pre-ordered several times over (self-included). And, did I mention many pieces in the collection come in Navy?
Nomia features simple clean lines that are ingeniously disrupted by cutouts and slits, finished edges made to look raw, and interlaced grommets. My favorite details were the asymmetrical necklines and shoulder straps literally held together with carabiners.
Customers were also treated to a hands on preview of the fall collection including a brocade trouser in rust and a satin emerald mini dress with ring closure. Yara’s new line of hand bags, several with metal rings as straps were crowd favs. In addition to this, Yara’s vegan leather trench kept people gleefully guessing. Yara sported her own creation too: a single metal hoop earring with ceramic bead. (I immediately wanted one).
I speculate, and think it’s safe to say we should expect a “more to follow” line of accessories from Nomia.
If you live in or near Brooklyn by the Bay, Nomia SS17 is available at McMullen Boutique now (click here). Learn more about Yara and stay tuned for more Nomia by subscribing to the Mcullen Newsletter (here).
