Ministry of Supply [Review]

Earlier this month I had the opportunity to sample a few pieces from Ministry of Supply. Let me tell you, I haven’t been this intrigued by a brand since Everlane first launched.

Having a background in engineering, I’m naturally drawn towards anything fashion tech-y. In fact, what originally attracted me to Everlane was that its founder was a former engineer. So when I learned that Ministry of Supply was founded by former MIT students my ears perked up.

Full disclosure, Ministry of Supply reached out to me to review the pieces I’m about to discuss.

Ministry of Supply pieces are wearable tech without the gadgetry or radio frequency waves. Simply put its just clothing, people. What makes it unique is the technology behind the materials, like temperature regulating fabric used by NASA astronauts. They use new materials, aerospace, robotic engineering, and thermal analysis to create better performing clothes.

One of their most popular pieces for women are dress shirts that are moisture wicking, wrinkle free, and most important stylish!

Because I’m always here for a classic button down I chose the Juno shirt dress in white. I had my doubts at first because I’ve been let down by many a white shirt, even Everlane’s. Most white button downs tend to wrinkle, bunch, or shrink. Worst yet they require dry cleaning or starched ironing and who has time or money for that? The only white shirt that hasn’t let me down is a high end Helmut Lang, but this is a one time investment piece.

The Juno shirt dress is everything you could wish for in a button down and more. The fabric is super soft and is darted so that it nips you in at the waist. It’s lightweight but not sheer or see-through.

The cuffs are slightly longer, which is perfect for those of us with long arms. The sleeve are slightly bell shaped which IMO provides a modern edge.

My favorite detail by far is the neckline. The button placket includes an inverted “modesty” button located between the 3rd and 4th button. This allows you to wear your blouse low cut but without exposing your jewels. I hate the feeling that my blouse might open up when I bend over. Ministry has solved this dilemma(I wonder if the woman/wife/girlfriend/mom on their team thought of this detail?). Thankfully I received an answer from a savvy reader who wrote to me, pointing out that one of their co-founders is a woman (Kit Hickey). As such, one could reasonably attribute this detail to her or another women on the team may have thought of this.

To watch me wax poetic about this shirt then head over to my IGTV channel where I filmed a try on.

I also tried the Women’s Skinny Kinetic Pants. These are an essential Audrey Hepburn-esque cigarette pant. True to its description these don’t bag or sag. 98 Customers gave it 4.7 out of 5 stars. Because the waist was a bit loose on me I styled them in a gamine look with an oversize black turtleneck, and classic penny loafers (channeling Audrey’s dance scene look in Funny Face). The Kinetic pant does come in a style with belt loops if you’re looking for a traditional trouser.

Scientifically Wrinkle Free: the Kinetic pants use your own body heat to release and relax wrinkles without the use of harmful chemicals. The Kinetic pant is also machine washable

Ministry of Supply definitely makes the grade in this enginerd’s book!
