Love it or hate it piercing is back in a major way. Just as fashion trends come and go so does body art in all its forms.
Until recently my 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and yes my 5th (for a grand total of 7) piercings were underutilized. And this was mostly due to the dress codes in my professional life. Standing out on account of ones personal appearance was a big no-no in the workplace. My options were pretty much limited to simple gold ball studs that I bought at the spice bazaar in Istanbul.
But times have changed and workplaces are becoming more accepting of personal expression. Be that tattoos, hair styles, and piercings.
Now I’m free to dabble in the occasional statement earring or the dainty earring. As a the dainty earring trend picks up steam, and is showing more prominence on my site (here) I’m seriously considering another piercing (or two).
Until then I’m making the most of what I have with pieces from Maison Miru.
Writing this post with jewelry kindly gifted from Maison Miru has cause me to reminisce on my own ear piercing journey.
For many of us getting our ears pierced is both a right of passage and a claim independence.
How many of us had our mom take us to get our ears pierced as a kid? For me it was a somewhat traumatic experience because the stud passed clear through my ear!
But the result was legendary because my mom procured special 24 carat gold and diamond (my birthstone) screw backed studs for my little ears. Unfortunately due to caring relatives both earrings were lost to me for decades. My grandmother had one in her ear in Oklahoma whereas my great aunt had the other in Kansas. Both claimed they had gotten stuck in their ears due to the screw threads being jammed.
Fortunately I managed to reunite the pair in my 20s and bestowed them upon my own daughter when she turned 5. This time too, there were tears, but no blood. And her studs remain safely locked away in a safe place.
Trauma long forgotten, my subsequent piercing were exercises in sisterhood bonding . At age 11 my stepsister and I bounced into Bedazzled at the BayFair Mall and claimed our cool girl status with matching 2nd piercings. I don’t think my mom expected that!
My last 3 were all about claiming my freedom to do what I want when I want. Or so I thought! At age 14 After a torturous try at using a sewing needle and an ice cube, my mom caved and gave me the money to get it done right. But she was done!
So my 8th (and failed) attempt was at the hands of my bestie. Although 2 years my junior she always had in her possession an ear piercing gun, fake IDs, and a clothing security tag remover!
The one thing she didn’t have was adequate sterilization. My newly acquired cartilage piercing didn’t look so cute after my ear doubled in size!
All that said I highly recommend you leave it to the pros and drop into a Maison Miru ear bar online to satisfy whatever phase of ear piercing life you’re in.
