The Essential Trenchcoat

There’s no better way to crush a rainy day than with a classic and chic trench coat.

Who can forget the closing scene of Breakfast at Tiffany’s when Audrey Hepburn frantically searches for “cat”? Even totally drenched, she manages to look effortlessly chic in her classic simple Burberry trench coat.

This iconic scene is just one reason why the trench coat continues to be #1 on my wardrobe essentials checklist.

Whether you prefer the investment piece with the recognizable tartan liner or a sleek minimalist number, there are many options out there that are both stylish and budget friendly.

They key to selecting the perfect trench is all about the details. A lot of thought should go into selecting a trench coat especially since it will be a piece that you reach for year after year.

Here are a few questions to put you on the right path to choosing the right trench coat.

Does it come with an interior lining? If so, what kind and is it removable?
Is your goal fashion or function or both?
Do you prefer buttons in a contrasting color or to match your coat?

u may not need a heavy trench if you live on the west coast, or you may want a trench that is drapey and serves as a light layer. I prefer a lightly lined coat with matching buttons. And when it comes to closing my coat I typically skip the buttons and instead tie it at the wait. I’m a “cincher”.
