Part 1 of a 2 Part series on Clean Beauty. Today’s post is in collaboration with Beauty Heroes who kindly gifted me two of their beauty boxes available by subscription. Reviews and opinions are my own. As well as photos unless otherwise credited.
I can’t imagine a time in my life when I didn’t have a skincare routine. Watching my Diana Ross-esque mom walk through her daily cleansing ritual, it wasn’t long before I eagerly adopted my own routine. My mom was always on hand to give advice and recommend the best products to treat my acne-prone skin.
I wish I could say the beauty products of the early days were “clean”. Not that we were completely unaware of organic skincare. We disrupted our usual products with the occasional kitchen made honey mask. And of course, being African American, cocoa-butter was a huge staple in our medicine cabinet.
For many of us our mothers were, and still are, our Beauty Heroines. But for up to date intel, most of us rely upon the Internet for searching out the best clean beauty products.
With so much confusing and conflicting information on the web, you need a champion to turn to. I’ve found mine in Beauty Heroes.
Based in Novato, CA Beauty Heroes is the one stop shop for all things clean beauty. Here you can find over 80 Clean Beauty Brands all with detailed product descriptions, and ingredients list. The Beauty Heroes site is loaded with informative articles and videos on common skincare ingredients highlighting its Superpower or exposing its Villainous properties.
Its founder Jeannie Jarnot, after uncovering the prevalence of toxic ingredients in the spa industry – and how they might have contributed to her own infertility – Jeannie began her quest to make clean beauty the rule rather than the exception

- Shop Smarter Not Harder. When your cabinet is free of beauty Villains, you can download the free Clean Beauty Pocket Guide. I now use the pocket guide to check the ingredients when I shop for beauty products not just for me but the entire family.

Knowing what to buy can take a lot of research and trial and error. Beauty Heroes lets you explore their many products in the Monthly Natural Beauty Box. You’ll receive one clean beauty brand each month, always valued at $90 or more. One full-size product, plus deluxe sidekicks, for an immersive experience. And save 15% everyday in their Beauty Store, so you can buy what you love, when you decide you want it.
In the old days my mom and I had access to a limited collection: Ponds, Ivory Soap, and Noxema to name a few. Products which contain dozens of chemicals. Chemicals the Beauty Heroes like to call “Villains”. Looking back I realize that it was probably those very products that contributed to or directly caused several skin reactions that surfaced for me and my mom.
Today we are so fortunate to have access to alternatives to traditional skincare products. And I’m happy to be able to teach my own daughter healthy skincare habits. Just the other night we indulged in a mother-daughter pampering with Maya Chia The Refresh Mint Resurfacing Moisture Mask and bestseller The Optimist Hydrating Essence.
There were lots of giggles and herbal tea! I remember saying how much I was enjoying our mother daughter “bonding” when my 16 year old daughter said, “you mean self-care”. Self-care wasn’t a thing when I was growing up. Today self-care is not just a buzz word, but vital to leading a healthy life, discovering oneself, and reconnecting with the ones we love.
Next month I’ll be discovering clean beauty by Josh Rosebrook, so stay tuned. Can’t wait for the next post? Be sure to sign up for Beauty Heroes Monthly Beauty Subscription starting at just under $60/month.
