Maybe you have heard of the 5 day floral challenge, maybe you haven’t. Admittedly, I’m not the first to find out about the latest trends and fashion challenges. Fashion challenges in particular are today’s version of the chain letter.
You ask yourself, “what will happen if I don’t take part? I will either get nothing if I do or a curse of some kind if I don’t”.
At its worst, a fashion challenge can feed into your inner FOMO and get you to spend money on what you don’t need. At its best you will discover what your likes and dislikes are and appreciate what you already have. The latter was the case for me.
I was skeptical about being able to complete the J Crew 5 Day Floral Challenge, as my style has evolved more to a minimalistic approach in recent years.
Did I even HAVE floral prints in my wardrobe, or did it all go by the Marie Kondo wayside? Honestly I was not up for falling victim to a marketing campaign (as much as I like J Crew).
As it so happens, because of the Kondo method I actually held onto the pieces I still loved, and several were included in my current summer capsule. My total collection of florals in my wardrobe amounts to about 8 items.
Below is the recap of how I styled my most loved pieces for the 5 day floral challenge.
Day 1: Blazer by J Crew x Liberty Fabrics
Day 2: Tunic at Anthropologie
Tunic top with J Crew trousers (hemmed for a cropped fit) and vintage Ferragamo pumps
Day 3: H&M Cropped Flared Trousers
Day 4: Floral Heels at Target
Floral stilettos worn with vintage denim jacket, Urban Outfitters trouser, and Everyone the Relaxed Poplin shirt
Day 5: Marni at H&M Silk Reversible Top
What I learned from 5 day floral challenge is that even if you profess your style to be a certain type, you can and should mix it up from time to time and wear the unexpected every now and then.
What’s important though is that you still stay true to your aesthetic, which for me turned out to be the black and blue hues that you see all over my blog and social media posts.
So called “dark” florals are ones that I naturally gravitate towards. If I do decide to jump on the floral trend band wagon when it comes ’round again, I at least know what works for, and looks good on me.
